Title: Brain Teasers
Post by: SoaringUSAEagle on April 20, 2004, 03:46:54 PM
Anyone who would like to help with this extra credit project is welcome to... bob@pogopal, PogoPal, Mayhem and all you other math generated gurus too lol.

I would appreciate it if you guys could help solve these 6 puzzles for me.  It's for 50 extra credit points in my math class, and I could really use them as I have a D in that class.

Thanks.

What can I say? Doing the puzzles yourself will help you develop the skills to pull that D up to a B.

The first thing to notice is all of the puzzles are the same puzzle. Then I would focus on the product of three numbers that equal 6 (think prime factors). After that, I would focus on the _ + _ / _ = 4

Then looking at the right-most column should allow you to fill in that column entirely and identify which row each remaining digit is in. That leaves you with only 8 possibilities for plugging in the remaining digits, which seems susceptible to brute force.

Isn't there an auto for this? lol

Thanks for the hints so far bob.  I will take a look at it.  I have until ohhh... May 20 something before this is due, so I mean I have the time to work on it, but I am horrible at these things.

At one puzzle every 5 days, I think you have plenty of time to do them all on your own. After all, practice makes perfect.

Homer, I won't do your job for you, but I will give you a hint: You don't need to type the E and the S -- just type Y.

bob is refering to the simpsons episode where homer becomes obese to get worker's comphensation so he can work from home using the computer.

"Vent radioactive gas?"  [types] Y-E-S.
"Sound alertness horn?"  Y-E-S. [horn sounds in the distance]
"Decalcify calcium ducts?"  Well, give me a Y, give me a...Hey!
All I have to type is Y.  :D

As DJ says, reading is good. I think though that choosing enjoyable, interesting topics is as important as the quality of material.

Mathematics is another. When I was your (darkearthgoddess's) age, I used to picture projections of rotating hypercubes in my mind. I found it interesting to see an accurate rendition on Andromeda recently.

Chess is another. Many games exercise the ability to reason. Backgammon, checkers, mastermind, go, othello etc.

Crosswords and other word puzzles are other ways to exercise the mind.

Writing is another. I have always hated to write anything down, but the ability to express oneself is an important mental task both in writing and verbally.

Public speaking and debating are also good ways to exercise the mind as is theater.

Music instruction -- any instrument -- or even art/music appreciation.

Do a lot of whatever you enjoy and a little of whatever you do not enjoy.

Cheers,
Bob
