Title: Solar Eclipse, Monday, August 21, 2017
Post by: Squid on August 15, 2017, 03:31:32 PM
The total eclipse will be occurring over the United States from Oregon to South Carolina - where the total blackout will occur.
The rest of us will only get a partial eclipse.  If you'd like to see how it will look from your location, enter a zip code after going to the following site:

http://time.com/4882923/total-solar-eclipse-map-places-view/

DON'T FORGET YOU NEED SPECIAL GLASSES TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE ECLIPSE.

You can also fashion a shadow box for indirect viewing.

I have no idea how viewable this will be in my area, but I picked up some solar viewing glasses just in case.

Good luck!  I should warn people that there are fraudulent glasses out there that don't meet the requirements for eye safety.  Be careful where you buy the glasses.  Check with your local library; they might have glasses.

The ones I got stated :

• ISO 12312-2 for Safe Solar Viewing
• Blocks 99.999% of Intense Visible Light
• 100% Protection from UV and IR Radiation

I was watching the news and they stated that the ISO number is the thing to look for.  I think you're good to go!  I think even the fraudulent glasses have the other information.  All glass are sold out around me and the libraries are out, too.  I think I'm out of luck but will keep trying.

This post is probably not necessary, but just a reminder that the solar eclipse is happening this morning.

If you snap any pictures, lets post them in here!

If you snap any pictures, put your protective glasses in front of the lens or you might fry your camera/phone!

Saw the eclipse!  Going out one final time but the maximum in this area is over now (71%).

I watched this on the television. Learned a lot from the different announcers too.
We will only have to wait another 90 plus years for this to happen again.  giggle2.gif

I was told that Amazon sold the special glasses to use and they are bad ones.
Hope everyone who bought from Amazon was able to get the email notice so they don't try to use them.  stop.gif

Another total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States on April 8, 2024. Traveling a different path from today's eclipse, the total eclipse will be visible in Mexico, the central US and east Canada, with a partial eclipse visible across North and Central America.

The next total solar eclipse from coast to coast in the U.S. will occur on August 12, 2045.  This will be the highlight of the century, with a totality path more than 160 miles wide. A wider totality means the eclipse lasts longer, over six minutes in this case. Major U.S. cities to witness this eclipse will include Salt Lake City, Colorado Springs, Colo., Tulsa, Okla., Montgomery, Ala., and Orlando, Fla.

Sorry about the quality, but it's the best I could get using my solar glasses.

The second picture is the most coverage we saw here in western Canada.

Yeah, it was really neat to see and looked great through the glasses. It's too bad I couldn't get any better shots with the camera.

These are great pictures. Would be something to put into a scrap book to pass down to others.
You took these your self and very special. Really nice looking to me.  tumbsup.gif

These are great pics Mayhem ... we didn't get to see much here in our location but watched it on television. You hold a very special part of our past 2017 eclipse of the sun, whereas each future eclipse will have differences in their appearance. Well done.

Thanks! I just wish we would had a full eclipse. This video below was sent to me the other day of what totality looks like (like actually being there).

The excitement of the fellow who made this video was really felt while watching.
And he did good in picking a spot with not as much traffic. I saw where there were places that it took 3 hours just to get out of the parking lot and then bumper to bumper cars to get anywhere.
I think you would have a great time if you were to go to the next one. This guy sounded like he did not regret going to see and film in person.
I see there will be another one in 7 years. Lots of time to plan.
And this guy lucked out in getting those special glasses too. They were gone in lots of places when I would watch to see the news on tv.
Thanks for sharing this video. It was really nice to see.
And I hope you do decide to take a trip to be able to see the next one and make your own video.
That would be awesome.

I had a feeling that would happen here as well (I live in a small town) so I ordered my glasses online in mid July. They were selling out fast ... even at that time. I couldn't even find them here, so I had to order them from the US.

You're welcome!

I'm going to capture it on video next time - not sure why I didn't even think of it. I have a tripod and everything ...

It sounds like you're all set with the right equipment to tape that next one.
And the special glasses also.
I did see where some people had to put a pair of those glasses over their camera lens.
Will you need to do that too or do they make lens to use if purchased for camera?
I wonder if those camera lens are expensive?
And having the tripod will be best also.
I hope to see what happens in 7 years. Something fun to look forward to.
It sure was exciting and fun this year.  cheesy.gif  And if you can tape it that will be even better.

Yes, they sure do make them for camera's - and even iPhones. They range from $100 - $250, but it's just a filter that goes over the lens. It's pricey, but you will get a much cleaner shot than putting those throw-away solar glasses over the lens.

Wow, that is pricey but may be worth it especially if you get better pictures.
Hope you can get lucky and get one on a sale. It sounds like you would like this one better.

I found a badge icon at Pogo from the Whats Your Sign Album that is the super secret badge of an eclipse.
It would have been nice to have that to use for when the eclipse was happening.
I need to look in that album book for more badges that I have forgotten about.

I really do need to go through my badges to remind me of the many that are so very nice.
It gets busy at Pogo and sometimes I have my hands full just trying to keep up.
But, I was pretty happy to find this particular one at this time.
Have a super day.  dancing16.gif
