Title: Oh, no!
Post by: Squid on November 11, 2017, 03:36:52 PM
I just got a robocall telling me that my Windows license has expired and that all functions will cease!  I have to call the 800 number to get the license reinstated.  I better get out my credit card.

I've received those calls before, letting me know that "there is an issue with your windows operating system".

Greetings all,
This happened to my friend in Lincoln City, OR.  Unfortunately, he call the "855" number and things got worse.  They wanted his bank account number or credit card...he chose credit card.  Cost him $217 and they were remotely logged into his computer for over 2 hours.  He then called me.

Darn don't know what is on his computer.  All I could suggest was the following.
1.  Download and run a free (for 15 days) copy of Malwarebytes.
2.  Download and run a "Free" copy of "Malwarebyes AdwCleaner".
3.  Download and run a "Free" copy of "CCleaner".

This has worked for me...but we have to all watch out for the "Rat B*stards"!!!

Be Safe...DON'T CLICK!

Those were great suggestions, but your friend may want to consider an OS reinstall.

If they had remote access for a couple hours, who knows what happened in that time. I wouldn't chance anything.

My relatively new ( less than 2 yrs) Dell laptop has been experiencing Windows crashes lately, about once a week.  Turning the system off and on seems to get it loaded and running again.  Should I do a complete OS reinstall?  If I do, do I lose EVERYTHING?   UGH

Greetings Mayhem, Squid and all you other PogoCheats,

The OS reinstall should get you back to "factory settings".  It has been my experience that I lost everything.  My biggest problem is waiting the 6 Months to get some new PassWords for some autos.  I have back-ups for Turbo Tax (2012 thru 2016)  and backups for all the documents.  My pictures are on an Apple MacBook Pro (2011 model) so I feel good about them.  I also have hard copies of MicroSoft Office 2010.

I really believe my friend would be in way over his head if he tried to reinstall the OS.   He sometimes gets "Click-Happy" and loves to look at the "Click-Bait".  Additionally, all Emails get his attention and thinks a Nigerian Prince really wants to send him some money.

Thanks again and do have a great day.

What OS are you running on it? If you don't have too much installed, I would consider it.

Windows 10, came with the laptop, not an upgrade.  I do have a lot on it because I use it sometimes for business.  I back up some stuff but would have to do a mega back up.  If I need to, I guess I will.  Can I just say, "ugh!"?

Squiddy, might want to try the system file checker first...see if that solves your problem. I'm an "OS reinstall as a very last resort guy"...although I do agree with Ken that it's always something you should consider when you have issues.

I successfully system checked, Snappy.  It ran for about 20 minutes and said it successfully fixed but it does not say what was wrong or corrupted.  I must say, my system is running a bit faster and I lost nothing.  I really hope it stops the windows crashes.  I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS if I don't have to.  Thanks so much, everyone.

Do you remember what the errors were? Have you tried updating your video and sound drivers?

No to the drivers.  When it crashes, it does not give errors.  I just get the blue screen of death.

In my experience, the BSOD is almost always a driver issue. Hopefully this will solve your issue!

Greetings Squid, all you other PogoCheats and amateur/professional Computer Technicians,
Wow, unfortunately found lots of problems with the Dell Crashing.  I'll include a couple of them at the bottom.
But found an interesting solution.
Hey don't we all believe everything we find using google.
S1lent

Possible solution

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help in solving the issue.
- Start by doing a hard reboot, remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds and try booting it up again.
- If it gets stuck on the Dell logo again load into BIOS and reset it to default by pressing F9 then reboot it and see if it would get pass the Dell logo again.
- If these will not work remove the HDD off the laptop and see if it would get pass the Dell Logo because if it does that means the HDD is faulty.
- If it doesn't get pass the Dell splash screen without its HDD that means the problem can be the motherboard.
- Try to remove the CMOS battery then put it back in and see if this will solve the problem or not.
- If it's still under the factory warranty do contact Dell for a repair.

Dell Inspiron 15-5000 purchased in November 2015 and activated in December. Soon thereafter it began randomly freezing. The only way to resolve was a hard restart.
Spent a total of 5.5 hours on with tech support in 2 sessions.  During second we did a soft refresh of Windows10. Then, at the end of the 3+ hour call, it froze. Told that, despite paying for 2nd day on site service, needed to send it in to the repair depot.
Did that. The laptop arrived back 2 days ago. Apparently they did a complete reinstall of Win10.
Began working with the laptop yesterday. Installed Office 2013. Then Norton Security. About an hour or so later it froze again.
Called Dell Support today. Another 3.5 hours on the phone. 2 of those hours were running operating system updates. Also updated BIOS and firmware.
Not sure if this worked or not. If not, any ideas.
This should not be happening to a brand new laptop.

I had purchased Dell Inspiron 15 7559 laptop in Jan 1st week , 2017. After around a month, windows 10 started giving me issues related to password after the anniversary update. It would not let me enter the password and would just reset. Dell support team helped me with system restore and it worked fine for few days.
But later the same problem was back and dell support team told me to reinstall windows which I did and same thing kept on repeating and I had to reinstall windows as usual. At times, the BIOS would ask em for system password followed by HDD password followed by admin password which I didnt even set. Made this to work by randomly tapping a key 4 times and then clearing passwords in bios setup.
Even tried calling Microsoft and all they did was re-install windows 10. As usual same issues were coming. In the end before sending laptop for repair I started getting BSOD. After I got the laptop back from repair on March 23,2017 where they changed the motherboard and HDD same problems are coming related to password. I tried changing windows to 7 and started getting BSOD, even tried with 8.1 but same result. It even ran diagnostic tests on its own when shutdown(Nothing was connected to the laptop. Not even the power cord).

Is there any way in which I can sort this out because the dell repair center has just made things worse for me? I have already lost my labs and assignments in it. I don't want to waste time on this laptop anymore. Should I get a refund or replacement or store credit(if they give)?

If Squid still has issues and those don't work, my next recommendation is to do a BIOS update.

I went to my settings page where it said I had a Windows Update, despite having just done one.  It was  A BIG update and took a LONG time.  In settings, it doesn't say what the update pertains to.  I took a chance and updated.  So far, everything seems ok.  The problem with the laptop was happening approximately once a week, so I will wait.  If it occurs again, I'll try yours and or S1lent's suggestions.

THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR THE THOUGHTS AND HELP!

I received that update about 2 weeks ago. It basically reinstalls windows and leaves a copy of the old version on your hard drive.

If you're concerned about free space, I would click on the magnifying glass on the task bar and search for "disk cleanup" and run it.

I just found out today that my Dell warranty runs out in 9 days so I called Dell.  They went through two hours of checks (most of which I already did) and they say there is nothing wrong with the laptop.  They said what I already did might have resolved the matter.  They are going to monitor the laptop x 24 hours.  If anything happens, they will see it and know what to do.   I also received the rep's email and can email him directly after the 24 hour period.  It looks good.  He actually did something to fix blue screen stuff and it came out clean - nothing to fix.  I'll keep ya posted.  When I reboot the laptop, I'm going to run the disk cleanup, thanks

Greetings Squid,
That sounds like good news.  But Mayhem gave me bad new (kinda)...he talked about windows 10 updates...so I checked.  Darn, now I need to re-enter my 100 or so passwords to get my autos working again...Takes about 2 hours of cutting and pasting.

Oh how I wish we still had "dial-up" service.   Things were slooooooow at 9600 bits.

Hey...do have a great day all

Happy Thanksgiving Mayhem and all you other PogoCheats,
Yes, I am very disappointed with Windows 10 and all their updates.  I have three PC's and one Apple MacBook Pro that has BootCamp with Windows 10 so 4 computers to keep updated.  I'm disappointed with MicroSoft and all the "Malware, RansomWare and other problems" that get through their system.  If Apple had a bigger share of the market...their problems would also grow.

Yikes, I've been drinking wine and rambling,
Have a great day

Does this happen at completely random times? or usually when you are playing on Pogo - or doing something else?
Title: Re: Oh, no!
Post by: Squid on November 26, 2017, 09:41:09 AM
Random.  This last time was when the computer was up and running but I didn't have any browser open and I was doing nothing.  My email might have been up at the time but I wasn't doing anything with it.  I was doing something around the house and when I came back, I had the BSOD.  On previous occasions I was jumping around from browser tab to tab doing many things and another time I was only in a program for work, nothing else.  It seems very random to me.

This last time it only took restarting the computer to get things right.  I've emailed Dell yet again - no response yet.

Maybe something is loading at startup that shouldn't be and is creating issues. If you want, I can let you know if something looks out of place.

If so, press [CTRL] + [ALT] + [DEL] and click on "Task Manager". Then click on the "Startup" tab, take a screenshot and email it to me.

It depends on the current work load, they told me.  It might take up to two+ weeks to have my laptop back in my hands.  I have another computer so I won't be cut off but parting with devices makes me mildly nervous.  I have to clear all private/personal/proprietary info off the device first and still I get nervous.  The crashes are coming more frequently, I'm having a problem with the Windows Defender firewall and there are times when the fan sounds "odd".  It's the best thing to have this machine spruced up while I still have a warranty.

That's too bad, I was really hoping for your sake it was a simple software issue. You're right though, get it checked out while it's still under warranty.

I have the exact opposite issue with FedEx ... my package was supposed to be here yesterday, and now it shows :

Scheduled delivery: Pending

No date, time or anything. I also paid for 2 day shipping .. and we're on day #4 now.
That stinks!  I would contact them and get the shipping charges refunded.  Hope it arrives tomorrow for you, Mayhem.

Dell usually has deaf ears, from what I can tell from past experiences.   sad.gif

You're quick to chime in that Dell sucks, CM, but where were you 1 year ago when I was asking for advice and showing device comparisons here on the forum?  You might have contributed something productive at that time.  Thanks.

Greetings,
Well some good news in this...I'm not going to buy a DELL laptop.  My 2-year old Dell Desktop seems to be working great.

Thanks for sharing your story with us...Make us all more informed.

For years - over a decade, I swore by Dell and would only purchase Dell. Then I had a CS issue so the next laptop I got was a Toshiba and I loved it. When I needed a new, more powerful laptop, I researched HP and Dell. Given the problems I've had with the HP Desktop I have and their less than serving CS, and given their's and Best Buy's mediocre warranty, I decided to go with Dell again. They have a far better warranty than anyone else and with their extended coverage I get on site repairs.

What SUCKS is that NO computers last forever. Many only a couple years. What SUCKS is that to have a computer last more than 5 years, you need extended coverage. What does NOT suck is that every extended warranty I've purchased has been paid for by whatever sale price I purchased the item for, and has paid for itself again, many times over, by the use I get out of it.

Anyone who tells you HP sucks, or Dell sucks, or Toshiba sucks.... they're only speaking from their experience and YOUR experience may be much better.

I'm interested to find out what Dell tells you, Inkster.

Yep. I had a Dell tower that lasted me over 10 years. Yes, 10 years. Only upgraded the drives, vid and sound card and that's about it. The motherboard, chip, RAM, power supply, etc lasted that whole time with zero issues. It still works, was just too slow and the RAM was too expensive to upgrade. Now? I'd never buy a Dell again. After recommending them to my sister and parents, they have gotten duds. Just terrible quality now and horrible CS.

I've had good luck, so far, with my Lenovo and will stick with that brand...or ASUS going forward. HP is dead to me. Sony is too expensive. But those are all my experiences...which many people swear by HP and love them. So, yeah.

Greetings,
Computers, cars and yes girl friends...If you had good luck with them you stick with them.  If not you drop them like a "Chinese Chicken".

Don't know where I heard that quote...maybe after some cheap Boxed wine.

UPDATE:  After multiple trips back to Dell to fix the issues, the computer has failed completely and they can't get it to reinstall the OS.  "This PC cannot be reset"

Dell has agreed to replace the computer, which is in process right now.  Because of all the problems and the protracted length of time, they are upgrading the specs on the laptop - but it is the same model, just newer.
