I'm a cat person myself and there is one in my area that I believe is homeless. I'm trying to get him/her inside on the cold nights, but they just take off right away.
Not sure what to do as pretty soon it's going to drop to -10F .. and I just can't see a short hair cat surviving that.
I had a stray some years ago and I made a little cave for it using a clean garbage can, lined with carpet remnants and a carpet flap over the opening. He used it for weeks. He had a bad tail injury and probably succumbed to it, poor thing. Couldn't get close to it.
Oh, that's an idea! I still have an old cat bed ...
Today I am going to try befriend it by leaving some flaked tuna by the backdoor and see what happens. It's freezing here now, and it's just going to get a lot colder tonight.
