Yes they are, and are great in laptops because it really helps keep them cool (SSD's have no moving parts like a normal hard drive does).
Nothing spoils a good story like the arrival of an eyewitness.

SSD in a laptop for day to day...then get an external hard drive with USB for storage. That's what I'd do if I got a new desktop. SSD for operating system, HDD for everything else.
