Title: Re: NHL
Post by: Homer on December 27, 2008, 06:31:50 AM
I blame the coach for this one. I don't know why he thought it would be a good idea to give Biron the start when he's been out with the flu and hasn't played in 2 weeks. He was clearly rusty. He should have been sent to the AHL to scrape the rust off before getting another start. Besides Nittymaki is a better goalie than Biron.
Title: Re: NHL
Post by: bobby on December 27, 2008, 12:02:41 PM
havent the flyers won like 6 of 9 or something like that with nittymaki getting most of them wins?
Title: Re: NHL
Post by: Homer on December 27, 2008, 12:18:13 PM
They are 7-2-1 in the last 10 and something like 15-4-1 in the last 20 with Nittymaki playing most of the games

They won't make Nitty the starter because Biron is making starter money. I would put the best guy out there and that is Nitty

I am so surprised that the Bruins would play a Winter Classic at Fenway and that the opponent would not be the Montreal Canadiens. Nothing against the Flyers, who are a classic team, but seriously. No two teams in any sport have faced each other more in the playoffs.

the hawks dont really have any rivalry with them 2 teams..however put them two teams together and make the minnesota north stars giggle2.gif...then you got a classic norris division showdown..but they were talking about maybe making 2 of these games per year and putting one out west in colorado and they would play minnesota or san jose then maybe an all canadien one out west

Ovi suspended 2 games; Day-to-day with sore kneeTuesday, 12.01.2009 / 4:08 PM / NHL Insider By Dan Rosen  - NHL.com Staff Writer The NHL announced Tuesday that Washington Capitals' forward Alexander Ovechkin has been suspended two games without pay as the result of a knee-on-knee collision with Tim Gleason of the Carolina Hurricanes Monday night in a 3-2 Washington victory.

"I regret that this has happened," Ovechkin said in a statement released by the Capitals Public Relations department. "I'm glad that Tim wasn't injured because I never ever want to see anyone get hurt. I am disappointed to miss these games and I can't wait to get back on the ice next week to help my team."

Ovechkin, who was issued a five-minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct by the officials on the ice, will miss Thursday's game at home against Florida and Saturday's game at Philadelphia. He's eligible to return Dec. 7 at Tampa Bay. It's the first time he's been suspended in his career.

In a press release announcing the suspension, the League explained that Ovechkin "was involved in an incident where he extended his knee while delivering a hit" at the 12:05 mark of the first period.

Ovechkin, who leads the Capitals with 18 goals and 30 points, was also issued a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct Nov. 25 against Buffalo.

MORE NHL INSIDER STORIES ›Earlier Tuesday, Ovechkin expressed how thankful and lucky he is that his right knee isn't as seriously injured as it appeared when he lay prone on the ice in Carolina Monday night after colliding with Gleason.

"It's not a bad injury," Ovechkin, who may practice Wednesday, told reporters at the practice facility. "I thought it was going to be worse but thank God I can walk and I can skate. Of course it's a little bit sore, but it's not that serious."

Ovechkin, who is being listed as day to day with a sore knee, was writhing in pain after collision and several minutes later had to be helped off and into the dressing room. He couldn't put any weight on his right leg.

But he skated for roughly five minutes Tuesday morning at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. before his teammates came on the ice for practice. He was not in his hockey gear, but took a few strides and handled the puck a bit before going off.

According to reports, Ovechkin at first didn't use his right leg to push off, but by the end he was skating on both legs and even bent his right knee a few times before leaving.

Ovechkin missed six games earlier this season with an upper body strain. He missed only two games due to injury in his first four seasons.

Ovechkin said he was just trying to "make a normal hit" on Gleason, but the 'Canes defenseman turned quickly and he couldn't react in time.

It was his second game misconduct in the last three games. He was also called for a five-minute boarding major and game misconduct in last Wednesday's game against Buffalo.

Ovechkin was also involved in a controversial knee-on-knee collision with Pittsburgh defenseman Sergei Gonchar in the playoffs last season. He did not receive any supplemental discipline for that hit.

Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau expressed concern for the way Ovechkin plays when he addressed the media after Tuesday's practice.

"He's pretty reckless," Boudreau said. "Boy it's hard telling a guy that scores 60 goals a year to change the way he plays. At the same time, I don't want to see him getting hurt. Maybe he has to pick his spots a little bit better. It's something that will have to be addressed by us, I guess."

Boudreau hinted that he may soon have a talk with Ovechkin about the way he plays, but he's not totally convinced it will do any good. Boudreau, though, doesn't believe there is any malicious intent in the way Ovechkin plays, saying he just plays hard all the time.

"Not only as a coach, but as somebody who admires him, I just don't want to him put himself in harm's way," Boudreau said. "So we'll see. I don't think anything being said is going to change the way he plays. Who knows?"

"It's not a bad injury. I thought it was going to be worse but thank God I can walk and I can skate. Of course it's a little bit sore, but it's not that serious."
-- Alex Ovechkin
Ovechkin seems intent on keeping things status quo, saying he won't change a thing about his game or the way he plays.

"How can you tell me you just have to stop playing how you play?" Ovechkin said. "If I stop playing how I play I won't be that type of player. I play risky. I don't want to try dirty hits to make people get hurt, but sometimes people turn back or turn right away so I don't have time to realize to stop. It's pretty hard when you are skating fast and the guys just turn. What can you do?"

Almost lost, but certainly not forgotten from Monday's game was the injury suffered by Carolina defenseman Joe Corvo, who will miss the next 8-12 weeks while recovering from surgery to repair a laceration in his lower right leg.

Corvo was cut by the skate of Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner. According to the Hurricanes, he was transported to Rex Hospital, where Dr. Marty Isbell of the Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic performed surgery to repair the injuries.

"It's never good when you see a lot of blood on a guy's sock like that," Canes forward Matt Cullen told The Raleigh News & Observer after Monday's game.

PHILADELPHIA -- New coach, same result for the Philadelphia Flyers.

With Peter Laviolette making his Flyers debut behind the bench, Tomas Fleischmann and Mike Green scored two goals apiece, and Nicklas Backstrom added a goal and four assists, leading the streaking Washington Capitals to a 8-2 win over Philadelphia on Saturday.

It was the seventh loss in eight games for the Flyers, who were considered to be a Stanley Cup contender before the season. Philadelphia fired coach John Stevens on Friday and hired Laviolette to replace him.

Washington stormed ahead with three goals during a momentum-changing 9-minute power play that began at 14:33 of the first period and carried into the second. Daniel Carcillo and Matt Bradley got into a shoving match at center ice, and Philadelphia's Carcillo landed a big punch as Bradley was dropping his gloves.

"Obviously not the start we wanted," defenseman Chris Pronger said. "Getting down 1-0, the battle back to finally get a goal and start feeling good about ourselves and shoot ourselves in the foot with a nine-minute penalty that ultimately led to [three] goals.

"From that you're [4-1] and it starts to become pretty embarrassing. We struggled on penalty killing. Until we get that figured out, we're going to be in this predicament again."

The Southeast Division-leading Capitals didn't miss two-time NHL MVP Alexander Ovechkin, who served the final game of a two-game suspension. In winning its fifth straight, Washington set a season high in goals scored.

Philadelphia's poor play continued. The Capitals took a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds in when Fleischmann knocked in a rebound off Brendan Morrison's slap shot.

Mika Pyorala tied it at 12:06, putting a rebound past goalie Jose Theodore and ending Philadelphia's goal-less streak at 172 minutes, 10 seconds. The Flyers' previous goal was scored on Nov. 27 in the first period against Buffalo. They were shut out in consecutive losses to Atlanta and Vancouver before Stevens was fired.

The tide tied after Carcillo and Bradley tangled. Following Carcillo's punch, Bradley fell to the ice and left the game. Despite being in the process of dropping his gloves, Bradley wasn't penalized. Carcillo received 19 minutes and a game misconduct, resulting in the power play. The Flyers' 18 penalty minutes per game lead the NHL.

"I saw him drop his gloves, so I started punching," said Carcillo, who spoke with Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren after the game. "It was pretty quick, and emotions took over. I'm not happy about it. I thought we were in a fight. I don't know why he waited so long to drop his gloves. Once you see that, you're in a fight, and you start punching."

"I hadn't dropped my gloves yet," Bradley said. "Maybe it's my fault for not expecting that, but I was willing to fight him. Obviously, I didn't get started."

Philadelphia captain Mike Richards said he spoke with Carcillo and reminded him about the consequences of undisciplined play.

"All I can do is hold people accountable in here, and I don't think it will happen again," he said.

With the advantage, Fleischmann scored his second goal of the game with 3:20 left in the period, on a wrist shot from just outside the circle that beat Ray Emery to the glove side. Just 20 seconds later, Green scored on a wrist shot from the top of the circle that sailed over Emery's shoulder.

"Matt is one of the most popular players on the team, so when somebody takes liberties with him like that, I think the guys rallied around and wanted to make them pay," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We didn't want this to be for nothing."

The Flyers trailed 4-1 after the power play.

Emery was pulled in the second period after allowing a goal to Chris Clark. Brian Boucher came on and surrendered three more goals.

Laviolette, who led the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup championship in 2006, wants the Flyers to be a more disciplined team.

"I've never seen a nine-minute power play," he said. "My thought is the whole thing never should've happened. We got hit; we should've skated away and kept playing. There ended up being a confrontation. I didn't see it after the two-minute original penalty which shouldn't have happened because if we're going to go to the [penalty] box in an undisciplined manner we're not going to win hockey games.

"It should've been avoided."

It was a pretty crappy penalty but the Bruins two goals were pretty sweet.

It was great to see Bobby Clarke and Bobby Orr at the puck drop.

I would like to see Montreal host Colorado for a Winter Classic. Have the Avalanche wear the Quebec Nordique road uniforms, maybe play the game in Quebec City. tumbsup.gif

Just read an interesting Flyers stat.

Entering last night, the Flyers had a 59-72-30-4 lifetime record against Montreal. The Flyers have a losing lifetime record against just two teams: Montreal and Boston

I wonder if there is a team that has no lifetime losing record against the rest of the league undecided.gif

Habs beat the Bruins tonight. It is my only hockey team that won today.

The BU Women lost their first ever NCAA Hockey tournament game, in Erie PA to #1 Seed Mercyhurst. The BU Men lost game 2 of the best-of-3 to Merrimack, series tied 1-1 with the finale tomorrow.

The BU Men's basketball team lost the America East championship game to Vermont. Vermont gets the NCAA autobid.

Now, it is down to the BU Men's Hockey team and the QMJHL Maineiacs. BU must win tomorrow, and probably win both semifinal and final of Hockey East to get the automatic bid to the 16-team tourney! The Mainieacs have to win the regular season finale tomorrow or they might miss the playoffs. help.gif

The NHL needs to clean up hits from behind and head shots.
These used to be problems in college hockey and now the NCAA takes care of morons playing this ways. tumbsup.gif

Well, at least they booted him from the game. I am not a Bruins fan, but my friends that are cannot wait for the Penguins chucklehead to show up this week in the Garden. Matt Cooke, using a cheap shot to the head, took out Marc Savard, who probably will not play again this season.

Boston and my Montreal Canadiens are locked in a death-match to see who will be seventh (and play the Penguins) and who will be eighth (and play the Capitals). It would be a shame if the race came down to the loss of Savard for the Bruins. Matt Cooke did not even get suspended. What a joke! nono.gif

Colin Campbell, the NHL moron that did not suspend the repeat offender from the Penguins for elbowing a dude for the Bruins, said that he would attend the Penguins-Bruins game in Boston. He wants to make sure there is no retaliation idiocy. As opposed to not suspending a dude that injured another player and that player will not be back this year.

I still remember Chris Chelios' cheap shot on Brian Propp during the 1989 Playoffs. He elbowed Propp's head against the solid plate glass of the old Forum. Those boards did not move. Propp was unconscious when he hit the ice and the back of his helmet made a huge cut.

Later, when Montreal was winning game 6 in the Forum to win the series, the Flyers started a brawl when the Habs were on a penalty kill. Hextall charged into Chelios. The highlight of the fight. Mats Naslund (5'6") fighting his good friend from Sweden, Kjell Samuelsson (6' 5").

I miss the old days!!!!

Habs host the Maple Loafs Saturday Night. A win or a tie clinches a playoff spot. A loss and they get the 8th seed, unless Philly and New York tie. They could be the 6th, 7th or 8th seed, or miss the playoffs entirely.

im glad im a devils fans we are starting to get calls but let me tell you the past 3 games these refs have missed many calls for both teams. i know its the playoffs and a great rivalary but they are not supposed to try and hurt each other. end of 2 tied at  2-2

I don't know what a penalty is anymore. The obvious ones they miss and most of the ones they do call are very questionable.

score should be higher both teams are playing dirty. slashes and hooks dont seem to be called but the slightest bump the wrong way draws one.

Kovalchuk does not play well in the Devils system. I actually thought they were a better team without him because when he is on the ice he freelances too much.

well atleast kovy shouldnt be back, he only impressed me when he played with a bunch of rejects (no offense thrasher fans) he was the only talent. lou tried to make us a goal scoring team and it didnt happen. as you said he didnt fit in lous defense system. i say it time to say goobye to kovy even though devils fan want him back.  let him go to russia and play in front of no fans. martin needs to go never liked him always liked hale but he got traded. we definalty missed oduya we needed him but wont get him back. we need a strong offensive minded team player forward but not many of them out there and we just bit the big bullet with the trade. i was excited to get him but once he was here he never impressed me. let him go to ny and get paid big bucks to lose.

Yeah, how the series played out was weird .. normally they are a pretty good team at home. The nucks forum was entertaining after we got eliminated though. They had some people demanding refunds on tickets, suggesting we "blow up the team", strip the C off Luongo .. and my personal favorite "Luo til 2022".

I have the VHS hidden away somewhere in the Attic. I loved how Hextall punked Chelios.
My favorite part was watching Mats Naslund at 5'6" fight Kjell Samuelsson at 6'6". They are both Swedes and good friends. It was hilarious. By the way, we won the series!

Time to get ready for Game 2. Philly worked its plan to drive the net to perfection. The Habs look surprised by the give and go. The Flyers look good tonight, but as they know, you gotta win four.

Nice game for Bobby today. Another road win.

I don't know about the decision to pull Halak in the first game of the conference finals. Even though he was playing like poo it just wasn't his play that led to a 4-0 lead. Much to my surpirse the Flyers seem to have much more speed than the Habs. I think pulling the goalie may lead to more self doubt and uninspired play.

Homer, have you been watching the playoffs? This happened against the Capitals in Game 3 and against the Penguins in Game 1.
No sense keeping Halak in goal when no one in front of him felt like playing any defense. The van Reimsdyk goal was pretty for the Flyers, but two Canadiens fell asleep.
When you give up four goals, you get pulled. You can see it coming.

Again, great game by your Flyers and see you Tuesday night.

Nah, haven't seen any of the Habs other games. At the time I thought there was too much downside to pulling him. Especially if Price played well in mop up time. Of course he didn't so there is no controversy so it will be back to Halak in game 2.

No worries about Carey Price playing well in mop-up time.  hysterical.gif
I had trouble finding the Flyers-Bruins on TV done here. Versus was all Penguins all the time for round 2. Before that, I was watching Capitals on Comcast Sportsnet Washington.
Get ready for game two, boss-man. Maybe my Habs can figure out how to play defense.

btw what makes pittsburgh so special that they get to play in another winter classic next season!? how does washington even get into the running for one! last time i checked this was supposed to be an outdoor hockey game not a freak show featuring that joke of a player known as ovechkin...plenty of teams out there more worthy than either of the two...rangers, habs, maple leafs, avalanche, blues.....just a thought and my rant of the day

Blackhawks do have one of the best uniforms in Sports. Bruins black jerseys, Red Wings red jerseys, Quebec Nordiques white jerseys are pretty awesome.
For classic uniforms, Yankees, Celtics, Raiders, Colts and Canadiens are all super slick.

(By the way, I dislike the Red Wings, Raiders, Colts and Yankees. Their uniforms are cool, even if I dislike the teams.)

Carey Price is better but he needs to be more consistent. The real reason is the Habs kept Price and traded Halak is that Halak is much smaller. Next year, a goalie's pads will be sized based on the goalie's height.

Flyers get Hamhuis from Predators

The Flyers have traded defenseman Ryan Parent back to the Nashville Predators in exchange for the rights to defenseman Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick in 2011.

Hamhuis can be a free agent July 1, meaning the Flyers now have exclusive negotiating rights with him until them.

"Obviously, our intention is to get him signed prior to that date and that is what our aim is at this point in time," added general manager Paul Holmgren said. "The sooner that we get going on trying to get this done, the better."

Hamhuis, 27, recorded 24 points (5 goals, 19 assists) and 49 penalty minutes in 78 regular-season games with Nashville in 2009-10. He also posted two assists and two penalty minutes in six games of the Western Conference quarterfinal series with Chicago.

"Dan Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman," said Holmgren. "He has been in Nashville since his draft year. He's a guy who can play lots of minutes and he can play in a lot of different situations, from power play to killing penalties. He is another athlete we'd like to add to our team to continue to improve our defense."

In six full seasons of play in the NHL, all with the Predators, Hamhuis has compiled 32 goals and 129 assists for 161 points and 375 penalty minutes in 483 regular season games, in addition to nine points (1G,8A) and 18 penalty minutes in 28 career playoff games. He was a first-round pick in 2001.

"Obviously it is sad to leave the Predators. I spent some great years with them and it is great organization to be a part of," said Hamhuis. "I've heard nothing but great things about the city of Philadelphia and the Flyers.

"I think Philly has an unbelievable defensive core," added Hamhuis. "To join a core like that makes the Flyers one of the tougher ones in the league. To play against the teams from the East, the conference has a lot of great forwards, and watching the playoffs, having a great defense will get you a long way."

Parent was acquired by the Flyers as part of the Peter Forsberg trade with Nashville.

"I think Ryan is a good kid," said Holmgren. "He is an extremely hard worker. We certainly thank him for his services and his time here. He has a lot of upside as a player and he is going back to an organization that obviously knows him because they drafted him."

I figured you probably left for the football game. Can't blame a goalie on a penalty shot. Obviously the one thing I noticed in the game was all the missing pieces from the Hawks roster from last year. Toews looks like he was hurting. Coburn crunched him along the boards but the announcer said he actually got hurt in last nights game. Campbell made a few bonehead plays on defense

Half the team from last year is gone but for the most part the h awks have played pretty well considering they're a whole different team. The flyers look really strong and they move the puck tape2tape they got a good chance at being inthe finals again...a lot better chance than the hawks do as of now

We will go as far as the goaltending takes us. I wish they would commit to Bobrovsky as the everyday goalie. he covers much more of the net compared to Boucher. Bobrovsky was actually close to making the all star game until the we started playing Boucher more

Its all good. We had a horrible goalie. Nabokov in my opinion sucks. He is washed up and old.The team we have this year but im still skeptical on the playoffs with them. We can get there, just not finish. We'll see what happens. As far as the hawks beating us, honestly they were the better team. Having the presidents trophy means nothing if you cant bring home the stanley cup

I had read something saying that Crosby could play but is boycotting because of the NHL not doing much to prevent head shots.

Some bozo on ESPN was saying players should have to keep the sticks on the ice and if they don't it would be an automatic penalty. Stupid idea. The only way to remove head shots is to make checking illegal which ruins the game. I believe in player safety and all but when players don't wear their equipment correctly they have no reason to complain. Many hockey players remove the padding from their helmets.

I am a gigantic Habs fan and I did not think Chara should have received a suspension for that hit. He got the interference penalty and the match penalty to prevent another Habs/Bruins brawl. Chara is a big dude finishing a check at the wrong spot of the rink. I have seen far worse plays involving boarding penalties, elbows to the head and shots at people's knees.

The result of the play was horrifying. I can see some fans being mad about it, but I remember the same thing happened to Brad Marsh of the Flyers (he did not wear a helmet) against the Bruins.

I hope Patch can play again. He has a broken vertabrae in his neck and a massive concussion.

To me it looked like Chara was steering him towards it. The check wasn't vicious but the outcome sure was. I would prefer players drop the gloves rather than resort to cheap shots etc to settle a score.

My wife said this before the game (and neither of us has a rooting interest in the Stanley Cup Finals):

"If you get two by Luongo, you might as well pull him, since it will be six goals soon enough."

Two minutes later, the Bruins started scoring and broke the 1956 Montreal Canadiens record for quickest 4 goals in the Stanley Cup.

Just like Hextall did against that stacked Oilers team. I remember just how out of his mind he played. Then he went crazy. But for a while Hextall held that team together. I think Hextall was the last Conn Smythe from a losing Stanley Cup Finals team.

Bobby, it gets worse. In the three road games, Thomas has given up 1 goal, 2 goals and 1 goal. The two-goal game was overtime. The Bruins in the three road games scored 0 goals, 1 goal and 0 goals. He is averaging just a smidge over 1 goal per game and possibly could give up ONE goal in game seven and lose.

Habs sign forward Eric Cole from Carolina and "lost" Benoit Poulloit to Boston.

Well, we keep Andrei Kostisyn, Hall Gill and Mathieu Darche.

I just have a couple of off-the-shelf Habs jerseys and my 20-year-old BU road jersey before they added the strips.

I am probably going to get a throw-back red "sweater" from the Habs 1950s dynasty with a great number nine. No name required.

I have worn the Habs jersey my wife bought me to several Capitals/Habs games at Verizon, including a playoff overtime game two years when the Habs lost the game but won the series.

NEW YORK (AP) — Encouraging defensive players to be aggressive, hit hard and not back down is standard procedure in pro football. Paying them to injure the opposition is not.

New Orleans Saints players and at least one assistant coach, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, maintained a bounty pool of up to $50,000 the last three seasons, the NFL said Friday. Payoffs came for inflicting game-ending injuries.

Among the targets were Brett Favre and Kurt Warner, with "knockouts" worth $1,500 and "cart-offs" $1,000. Payments doubled or tripled for the playoffs, and, according to an investigation by NFL security, pool amounts reached their height in 2009 — the year the Saints won the Super Bowl.

"It was a terrible mistake, and we knew it was wrong while we were doing it," Williams said after the league said between 22 and 27 defensive players were involved in the program he administered, with the knowledge of coach Sean Payton.

"Instead of getting caught up in it, I should have stopped it. I take full responsibility for my role," added Williams, now the defensive coordinator in St. Louis. "I am truly sorry. I have learned a hard lesson and I guarantee that I will never participate in or allow this kind of activity to happen again."

Williams, the Saints organization and the players involved face hefty fines and possible suspensions. The team could lose draft picks when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hands out punishment.

"It is our responsibility to protect player safety and the integrity of our game, and this type of conduct will not be tolerated," Goodell said. "We have made significant progress in changing the culture with respect to player safety and we are not going to relent. We have more work to do and we will do it."

The NFL said its findings were corroborated by multiple, independent sources. Asked about potential criminal charges, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said:

"We believe that any violation of league rules should and will be handled by the commissioner."

All payouts for specific performances in a game, including interceptions or causing fumbles, are against NFL rules. The NFL also warns teams against such practices before each season.

Saints players contributed cash to the pool, at times large amounts, and in some cases the money pledged was directed against a specific person, the NFL said.

"The payments here are particularly troubling because they involved not just payments for 'performance,' but also for injuring opposing players," Goodell said in a statement. "The bounty rule promotes two key elements of NFL football: player safety and competitive integrity."

"Cart-offs" are defined by the NFL as a player being carried off the field; "knockouts" as when a player cannot return to the game.

The league absolved Saints owner Tom Benson of any blame, but said the investigation showed Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis knew about the "pay for performance" program.

"Although head coach Sean Payton was not a direct participant in the funding or administration of the program, he was aware of the allegations, did not make any detailed inquiry or otherwise seek to learn the facts, and failed to stop the bounty program. He never instructed his assistant coaches or players that a bounty program was improper and could not continue," the NFL said.

When informed about it earlier this year, the NFL said Benson directed Loomis to "ensure that any bounty program be discontinued immediately." However, the NFL's report said evidence showed Loomis didn't carry out Benson's directions and that in 2010 Loomis denied any knowledge of a bounty program.

"There is no evidence that Mr. Loomis took any effective action to stop these practices," the NFL said.

The NFL found no evidence of similar bounty programs within the league, but several Redskins told The Washington Post that Williams had a similar system as defensive coordinator for the team.

Former defensive end Philip Daniels, now Washington's director of player development, said he believed Williams paid off big hits with fines collected from players for being late to meetings or practices.

"Rather than pocket that money or whatever, he would redistribute it to players who had good games or good practices," said Daniels, who added the most he received was $1,500 for a four-sack game against Dallas in 2005.

"I think it is wrong the way they're trying to paint (Williams)," Daniels told the Post. "He never told us to go out there and break a guy's neck or break a guy's leg. It was all in the context of good, hard football."

Benson responded to the NFL's report saying: "I have been made aware of the NFL's findings relative to the 'Bounty Rule' and how it relates to our club. I have offered, and the NFL has received, our full cooperation in their investigation. While the findings may be troubling, we look forward to putting this behind us and winning more championships in the future for our fans."

The NFL's most infamous bounty case occurred in 1989 when Eagles coach Buddy Ryan was accused of putting a bounty on Cowboys players.

On Thanksgiving Day, Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson accused Ryan of putting a bounty on Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman and placekicker Luis Zendejas before a 27-0 Philadelphia victory. Ryan and his players denied the charges and NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue found no evidence of wrongdoing.

The NFL began its Saints investigation in early 2010 after allegations surfaced that quarterbacks Warner of Arizona and Favre of Minnesota had been targeted. After interviewing several Saints who denied the bounty program existed and after the player who originally made the allegations recanted, the league couldn't prove anything.

However, Goodell said the NFL "recently received significant and credible new information and the investigation was re-opened during the latter part of the 2011 season."

Warner, who retired after the 2009 season, responded to a fan's comment on Twitter that even if the Saints had a bounty program a playoff hit on Warner was clean. Warner tweeted, "I would have to agree with you!!!"

"I don't want to say that there was an attempt to injure, but I definitely think there were games where I could tell you that it seemed that they went beyond what was normal in regard to when they were going to hit me or how they were going to hit me," Warner said on the NFL Network. "Again, not with the intention necessarily of hurting me, but knocking me out of my game to get me to think about things differently. If by chance they hit me and knocked me out of the game, maybe that's a benefit for them."

Favre's agent, Bus Cook, said he was unaware of the investigation until Friday. He said the Saints should have been penalized for several hard, late hits during the 2009 NFC championship game and that he believed the contact was not coincidental.

"It was pretty obvious that the intent was to take Brett out of the game, and it happened the week before with Kurt Warner, too," Cook said. "I don't know anything about whether it was by design or whatever, but I think a lot of people shared that same viewpoint that there were some hits that didn't get called."

Cook, however, said Favre never suggested to him he was maliciously targeted.

"That's part of football, getting hit," Cook said. "Brett never complained to me one way or another."

After the news broke Friday, tackle Joe Staley of the San Francisco 49er tweeted: "Just seeing all the reports about the Saints D. I knew there was something fishy about getting punched in the face during our playoff game"

The 49ers beat the Saints 36-32 in the NFC divisional playoffs.
