When you mentioned yellow smiley that is a Tourney Director or TD for short.  And I don't know if you were the one asking if anyone was there or not, but all the games where you set at a table open up in a new window so no one can see you typing in the lobby area unless they are waiting for a chance to get a table wanting someone.
