rumor mill has been buzzing with gossip that Orlando Bloom might not be in the planned fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

A report that first appeared in a British tabloid, The Daily Star, quoted an alleged Disney insider as claiming Bloom's character, pirate Will Turner, would be killed off.

The unnamed source suggests the success of the franchise is due to Johnny Depp – who has already expressed interest in reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow beyond the initial trilogy – and Keira Knightley rather than Bloom. They also said that cost-cutting measures have rendered Bloom expendable.

"The script for the fourth Pirates movie is being worked on and all the finances are in place, but it was decided Bloom's character and a number of minor roles were not necessary to ensure it would be yet another box office smash for Disney," the report claimed.

However, public relations firm New Media Strategies, who says it's working with Disney on the franchise, issued a statement today calling rumors of Bloom's departure "completely unfounded."
