No, your fine. You will always have a main IE process .. and one new process will spawn for every tab that is open.

Just open 2 new blank tabs, you should now have 4 IE processes.

I recently noticed that when I run IE, two instances shows in the task manager.  Could this be caused by a trojan/virus that AV, malwarebytes, etc. can't detect? 

I'm running IE8 on a Win XP sp 3 machine with all the latest security updates from Microsoft.
