I discovered I couldn't completely close Norton down because, first of all, I don't know how to do that lol and, second of all, during download the tech said that when Norton was installed it took out the windows firewall and installed it's own. I was taken aback to think what might have happened with no firewall and was too chicken to proceed ... cluck, cluck.
In any case, here's what happened with the Royal Norton Program when I finally did find a way to do a system restore. Since it wouldn't allow me to do this the usual way ... I managed to get it done though the DOS prompt. Well that was fine and was a snap to do. BUT where did Norton go?? It simply was not there. I purchased Norton Security long and ever ago so by all reasonable standards you'd think it'd still be there somewhere. It wasn't. It was nowhere on my hard drive ... just an empty desktop icon. Norton had split ranks and stubbornly returned to the Royal Castle. I had no security, no antivirus and no firewall. My name was MUD!
Very quickly, I went back to the DOS prompt and did another system restore ~ back to today's date. And magically there it was, right where it was supposed to be, doing all the things it always did. Maybe a fellow has to do this hand in hand with Norton and a few $$$?
All this ... because I was having a problem with the last updates and didn't know how to get rid of them (which ones to delete or even if it was a good idea to do so). Now, the updates are turned off, Norton has returned and I can breathe again. Not much further ahead ... but I can breathe again.
Whew!But seriously, do those who are running XP still NEED these updates in the first place???

- May 14, 2011, 09:12:47 AMI won't even ask why you feel the need to do a system restore, that's a last ditch resort thing. System restore should bypass everything on your computer, including your AV program, and use the D drive to erase and reload the original operating system to your C drive.....it also will erase everything you have ever added to your your computer......Oh MY!
I use the same AV program, and tried to do a roll-back restore many months ago. it failed badly. Turned out that I had turned off to many start up programs...my bad, not Norton's bad.

- May 13, 2011, 03:57:18 PMI seem to have run into a brick wall - head first! I have Norton Security/Antivirus installed on my computer. I'm running IE8. I want to do a system restore and Norton refuses to cooperate. I set win/update so it won't allow any more updates. Also, I disabled Norton's antivirus auto protect and tried again ~ but it still stubbornly stands it's ground.
Ahem... can anyone tell me if they are just a tiny bit smarter than Norton. WHAT must I do to convince stubborn Norton to allow me to do a system restore please? Any help would be VERY greatly appreciated.
