Greetings,
You should be able to rank out with 180 stars without using any Power-Ups.
I do use the "UNDO" button...it works for me.  If I get stuck, I just press it until the auto takes me another direction.  Not sure how much time we have to get 3 stars.  But, I've went over 3 minutes and got mine.

Again, Have a great 4th of July...Veggie burgers are on our list...maybe some home grown broiled carrots...yum yum
