From playing, this is what I have worked out.  You have to be placed first, second or third on one of the event leader boards at the end of the event.  You are randomly allocated to one when you start playing.  I know this because my two accounts are on different boards.  First gets both cats, second and Third get one cat each. After that it's tokens, coins etc for rewards. Next to your rank on the top left side of the screen is purple button with a white crown.  It opens the daily and event leader boards.  Also has a button to show the rewards. IMO opinion there should be a set target and if you reach it, you get both cats.
