How do I put my picture on my profile for this ?

I want to make a nice profile page and add a picture ..... now on here many posts I have seen

members that placed a picture in the left and even fancy banners on the bottom .  I did try to

do it ,  but what it looks like to me is that I need to connect it to a world wide web + than

I'm lost  !!!!!   If someone can offer advice that would be more then super fine   :-*
